Dear World

From Portrait Photographer to Lead Producer

What started as a photography assignment became six years of shared work. Before founding Taíno Studios, I supported 116 Dear World engagements across corporate events, colleges, nonprofits, associations, international programs, and digital experiences.

Dear World was founded by Robert X. Fogarty after Hurricane Katrina as a humanitarian portrait project where participants write a message on their skin and are photographed with those words. The Brain Tattoo methodology has since been practiced with organizations such as Google, PayPal, Accenture, Harvard, and the U.S. Air Force, alongside thousands of people whose personal stories became part of the experience.

The Work Itself

One Chance, Every Time

The first time I came in, my job was to execute the Brain Tattoo portrait, the words-on-skin photograph that is, in many ways, the entire product. It is deceptively simple and technically demanding. The light has to carry the text. The expression has to be present. The person in front of the lens has just done something vulnerable, and the photograph has to honor that without over-dramatizing it. You have one chance.

The portrait was never simply a deliverable. It was the moment a person’s story became visible to everyone else.

Across multiple engagements, I showed up consistently. The portraits held. The behind-the-scenes work I captured told the story of how the process actually functioned, from the first moments of reflection to the portrait session and the final reveal. That documentation mattered beyond the event itself because it helped organizations show how participation felt, how people responded, and why the experience stayed with the room.

“The photography was part of the experience itself. Every portrait gave someone a way to make their story visible, and gave the room a chance to see the person behind the message.”

From Photographer to Producer

By the time I was producing the full keynote, my job had expanded well beyond the camera. I was building the production from the floor up, hiring photographers and photo assistants, assembling video teams, sourcing and briefing keynote speakers, coordinating schedules and travel, and managing the live experience without allowing the storytelling to feel rushed or mechanical.

The AACN National Teaching Institute alone brought together more than 5,000 critical-care nurses, two years into a pandemic that had fundamentally changed what their work meant. The scale of the conference required a large production system, but the heart of the experience remained personal. Individual nurses stepped forward to share stories of care, grief, resilience, identity, and purpose.

That is what years of trust actually look like in this work. It is not a bigger title. It is a bigger set of problems you are trusted to solve while protecting the people and stories at the center. This experience shaped the way Taíno Studios works today.
