Made Here, For Here
Power Street Theatre • Philadelphia, PA
Power Street Theatre creates art for social change by investing in artists, creative leaders, and community voices. Its work centers representation, access, education, and the belief that Philadelphia communities deserve opportunities to create, gather, and see their experiences reflected.
Theatre begins long before a finished production reaches the stage. It begins when a new script is heard aloud, when an audience responds to an idea for the first time, when a student shares something they created, and when artists meet the people who may shape what comes next. Taíno Studios has documented four commissioned gatherings across that process: The Machu Picchu Play reading, Neurospeak reading, a student showcase, and the Creative Garden Mixer.
These were less about polished stage moments and more about what happens inside the room. We photographed performers reading from scripts, audiences listening and reacting, students presenting their work, artists meeting one another, and the conversations that continued after the formal program ended. Power Street’s PlayTime series develops new multicultural stories in conversation with live audiences, while its community programs create space for people to experiment, build confidence, and share their voices.
Community arts work deserves the same quality of image as any mainstage production, and often needs it even more. The photographs are how the work travels to people who could not be in the room. Power Street Theatre uses the galleries across its marketing materials, website, social media, fundraising, and grant reporting, extending the value of each gathering while building a visual record of the artists and communities behind the organization.
“For a company like Power Street, the photographs are how the work travels to the people who could not be in the room.”
The Machu Picchu Play Reading
A live reading brought a developing story about history, identity, power, and the collapse of empires into conversation with a Philadelphia audience. The photographs preserved the performers, the room, and the first public life of the work.
Neurospeak Reading
A developing play exploring relationships and emerging AI technology invited audiences to consider what happens when technological intervention enters deeply human problems. Our coverage documented the reading alongside the reactions and conversations it created.
Student Showcase
Students stepped forward to share work created through Power Street Theatre’s community programming. The gallery centered their confidence, creativity, and the experience of presenting their voices to a live audience.
Creative Garden Mixer
Artists, collaborators, and community members gathered in a relaxed setting built around conversation and connection. The photographs showed the relationships that sustain creative work between formal productions.
