Concilio’s Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade • Philadelphia
Philadelphia is home to approximately 140,000 Puerto Rican residents, making it one of the largest Puerto Rican communities in the United States outside of Puerto Rico. Every year, Concilio’s Puerto Rican Day Parade turns the Benjamin Franklin Parkway into a celebration of that history.
That community has shaped the city for generations, from the cigar factories of the early twentieth century to the cultural institutions, businesses, and neighborhoods that continue to define North Philadelphia today. The parade brings together families, artists, community organizations, elected officials, and thousands of residents who carry their culture through the heart of the city.
For Taíno Studios, our role began with an invitation unlike any other. We were invited by Concilio to join the procession as official flag bearers, carrying the Puerto Rican flag while photographing the celebration from within.
Rather than observing from the sidewalk, we spent four hours marching alongside performers, nonprofit organizations, musicians, and community leaders, documenting the people whose stories make the parade what it is. The joy on people’s faces, the pride in every performance, and the sense of belonging were present from the first step to the final block.
The Dancing Diaspora
Some photographs can only be made by being fully present. While moving with the Esperanza Academy dance troupe, we instinctively captured a split second as every dancer leaped into the air in perfect synchronization.
The resulting photograph was published by Impacto Media as part of its parade coverage before being selected for the City of Philadelphia’s Philadelphia Stories 250: Out of Many, One exhibition, becoming part of Philadelphia’s visual record during the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The complete gallery supported Concilio’s press, social media, marketing, and organizational archives, preserving one of Philadelphia’s most significant annual cultural celebrations while extending its reach well beyond parade day. Community photography creates images that become part of a community’s living history.
