Inside the Parade

Concilio's Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade · Philadelphia

Philadelphia is home to approximately 140,000 Puerto Rican residents — the second-largest Puerto Rican community in the United States, behind only New York City. That community has roots here going back over a century, from the cigar factories of the 1920s to the cultural anchors of North Philly that have held the neighborhood together through every economic shift since. The Puerto Rican Day Parade on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway is not just an annual event. It is a gathering of a people who built something real in this city and want the city to see it.

Taíno Studios was invited by Concilio to participate in the parade officially — walking the route, carrying the Puerto Rican flag. That is an honor on its own, and it shaped the photography that came out of it. These images weren't shot from the sidewalk. They came from inside the procession, with access that only comes from trust. The result is a visual record with the warmth and immediacy of being present — not observing, but belonging to the moment alongside everyone else who showed up that day.

Concilio, one of Philadelphia's oldest Latino service organizations, has been a cornerstone of the city's Puerto Rican civic life for decades. Their parade draws thousands annually to the Parkway. The imagery Taíno Studios produced reflects the community pride, cultural performance, and collective identity that make this one of Philadelphia's most significant annual gatherings.
